A Rut. Wikipedia says it's a band from England: "The Ruts". American Heritage Dictionary defines a little better for me: “A fixed, usually boring routine”.
One might say I've been in a bit of a rut for a while now. Don't get me wrong, my life is pretty great, but I constantly need stimulation. Ask Keith, ask Shayne, ask anyone who knows me. There's always some sort of project(s) in my life to keep me busy: the band, traveling, editing videos, etc. It's a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. Good because it keeps me diverse and interesting. Bad because it makes my head move a mile a minute and wakes me up to 4am for 3 hours.
The rut has developed essentially cause I've been working continuously (like almost everybody) at the same place for 12 years. Sure, there have been changes and I still love it at Criterion, but I wanted a break. I've been in a rut! So, a couple of years ago I had this idea (one of 50 that day) to take a nice long break from work, from New York, from all I know and love. I thought I would travel the world and go to places I've thought about for years.
India has always been high on my list. So was Vietnam. So was Australia. But India...I don't know...India has been pretty fascinating to me. I immediately think of the colors, the architecture, the British colonization, and the curry’s. Especially the curry’s. Many of you have been to my house for a curry. I've dragged Susan to Indian restaurants all through London night after night. I just love em'. I always feel like I'm eating a flavor that's new exciting when I eat a curry. My love of the spicy concoction most likely prompted me to concentrate on India and drop Vietnam and Australia. After all, it’s a pretty big country.
Originally I was going to go on my journey for a few months. It was then called a sabbatical. I’d lie in bed at night with Keith and talk about the big trip often. But then I realized I didn’t think I wanted to be away that long. From him, from Gaz, from Weezy, from the world I’ve set up for myself. Instead, I wanted a nice long break, so I settled on a month. Two weeks ago, I decided that a month wasn’t long enough, so then it became 5 weeks, and I called and booked my ticket. It was official. The rut was going to come to an end.
